Samsung Mobile Head Confirms Galaxy S5 Is Off To A Strong Start

Recently we picked up on a report that claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 has had a better first month than its predecessor. As per the report in the first month alone Samsung has been able to sell 10 million units. Head of Samsung Mobile J.K. Shin has confirmed that the company’s new flagship is off to a much better start, outperforming its predecessor by 10 percent in the first month.

Official sales figures for the first month since release stand at 11 million, according to Shin. It merits mentioning here that Samsung isn’t giving us an estimate of shipped units. The company has already sold 11 million units to customers in just one month, a clear sign that its smartphone business may be regaining momentum.
Galaxy S5 sales are no doubted aided by the fact that this smartphone was released in more than 100 countries around the world on one day. From the get go it had access to a significantly large potential customer base which would explain the better performance as compared to the Samsung Galaxy S4.
The confirmation from Samsung comes at a time when there’s already speculation that the company isn’t happy with customer response so far. There are also rumors that it is developing a “premium” Galaxy S5 variant with a metal body and a 2K display. While Shin confirmed none of those rumors, he did say that the company expects an increase in market share this quarter and higher mobile profit margins due to strong sales.

Nokia XL: Nokia's Android phone with 5-inch display launched in India

New Delhi: Nokia's another Android smartphone has also made its way to India. The company, which launched its first Android phone in India early March, has now launched its 5-inch Nokia XL smartphone in India at Rs 11,489. The phone is listed on the company's online store and is currently available in two colours - black and orange. The Nokia XL will be delivered in 4 working days, says the website.
The Nokia XL is a dual SIM phone (GSM + GSM) and features a 5-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Under the hood is a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 768 MB of RAM. The Nokia XL has a 5 megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera.

The Nokia XL is a dual-SIM Android phone that features a 5-inch screen and a 5 megapixel rear camera.

The Nokia XL has a single capacitive button for navigation, unlike the three capacitive buttons on a Windows Phone smartphone. It is not a pure Android phone; it instead runs - Nokia X OS - a forked variant of Android, similar to the way Amazon does for its Kindle Fire lineup. Nokia has taken the open-source elements of Android and has pulled in other elements of Asha and Windows Phone to offer users a different experience.

The downside here is that its users can't have access to the Google Play Store for apps. However, the phones will run Android apps, but Nokia will curate a list of such apps. A recommended source for the apps is the Nokia store, says the company. In other words, the new platform, Nokia X, is based on the Android Open Source project (AOSP).
Nokia ditches many of the Google services that come with Android, which Google lets phone makers customise at will. Instead, the new Nokia XL emphasises Microsoft services such as Bing search, Skype communications and OneDrive file storage. Its homescreen sports larger, resizable tiles resembling those on Windows phone.

There is only one screen - which is actually a home for all the apps intalled on the phone. Swiping to the left or right from the homescreen will take you to Fastlane, a feature that Nokia had first showcased on the Asha 501 last year. Simply put, Fastlane is a stream of notifications and recent activity. It shows notifications from all the apps installed on the phone, however, you can personalise and uncheck the apps you don't want notifications from in Fastlane.
Jussi Nevanlinna, Nokia's vice president for product marketing, said the Finnish company is positioning the Nokia X as a bridge to high-end Windows smartphones under the Lumia brand.
