New Delhi: Nokia's another Android smartphone has also made
its way to India. The company, which launched its first Android phone in
India early March, has now launched its 5-inch Nokia XL smartphone in
India at Rs 11,489. The phone is listed on
the company's online store and is currently available in two colours -
black and orange. The Nokia XL will be delivered in 4 working days, says
the website.
The Nokia XL is a dual SIM phone (GSM + GSM) and features a 5-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Under the hood is a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 768 MB of RAM. The Nokia XL has a 5 megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera.
The Nokia XL has a single capacitive button for navigation, unlike
the three capacitive buttons on a Windows Phone smartphone. It is not a
pure Android phone; it instead runs - Nokia X OS - a forked variant of
Android, similar to the way Amazon does for its Kindle Fire lineup.
Nokia has taken the open-source elements of Android and has pulled in
other elements of Asha and Windows Phone to offer users a different
experience.
Nokia ditches many of the Google services that come with Android, which Google lets phone makers customise at will. Instead, the new Nokia XL emphasises Microsoft services such as Bing search, Skype communications and OneDrive file storage. Its homescreen sports larger, resizable tiles resembling those on Windows phone.
Jussi Nevanlinna, Nokia's vice president for product marketing, said the Finnish company is positioning the Nokia X as a bridge to high-end Windows smartphones under the Lumia brand.

The downside here is that its users can't have access to the Google Play Store for apps. However, the phones will run Android apps, but Nokia will curate a list of such apps. A recommended source for the apps is the Nokia store, says the company. There is only one screen - which is actually a home for all the apps intalled on the phone. Swiping to the left or right from the homescreen will take you to Fastlane, a feature that Nokia had first showcased on the Asha 501 last year. Simply put, Fastlane is a stream of notifications and recent activity.
